Study at a Korean university from South Africa
Your matric counts as 12 years of school, and you don't need any Korean to apply. Most South Africans start with a year of Korean at a Seoul university, then move into a degree. Here's how it works, and what it costs in rand.
Three ways in
Spend a year (four 10-week terms) at a university Korean language institute on a D-4 student visa, reach TOPIK level 3–4, then start a Korean-taught degree. This opens the widest choice of universities.
Some universities and majors teach fully in English, such as Yonsei Underwood International College. Some accept proof of English-medium schooling instead of IELTS or TOEFL; it varies by university, so check each one.
The Korean Government Scholarship covers tuition, a monthly allowance, flights and a year of Korean. It is very competitive. Applications go through a Korean embassy or a university, usually opening in spring (graduate) and autumn (undergraduate).
What's different for South Africa
The National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) meets the 12-year schooling requirement. You can usually apply in matric year with your Grade 11 and mid-year results, then send final results.
South Africa is in the Apostille Convention, so your certificate and transcript are apostilled in South Africa (by DIRCO or a High Court) instead of being stamped by the Korean embassy.
Some institutes ask students from African countries to pay more terms in advance. Yonsei, for example, asks for 4 terms (a full year) up front.
For a D-4 visa you show about KRW 8–10 million or USD 10,000 (roughly R92,000–115,000) in savings. This is proof of funds, not a fee: it stays your money.
Visa rules follow your citizenship. If you live in South Africa but hold another passport, tell us, because the rules may be different.
What it costs, in rand
Language tuition is from each institute's official fees (Oct 2026). Rand amounts use about R1 = KRW 87 (Jul 2026) and are rounded; check the current rate.
| Item | In KRW | Roughly in rand |
|---|---|---|
| Korean language year, Seoul (4 terms) | KRW 7.1–7.8 million | R82,000–90,000 |
| Korean language year, outside Seoul | KRW 5.6 million | R64,000 |
| Degree tuition, private university (per year) | about KRW 7–10 million, by major | R80,000–115,000 |
| Living costs in Seoul (per month, our estimate) | KRW 1–1.5 million | R11,000–17,000 |
| Bank balance for the visa (not a fee) | KRW 8–10 million | R92,000–115,000 |
What this really means
A degree in Seoul costs a fraction of international tuition in the UK, US or Australia, and national universities such as SeoulTech charge less than private ones. The real hurdle is the first year: language tuition, rent and the bank balance all come before your degree starts, so plan your savings early.
Universities to aim for
Aim high and apply wisely: we usually plan one or two top universities alongside one or two realistic Seoul options, so a single rejection doesn't cost you a year.
Yonsei University
Top-3 in Korea. Korean-taught degrees after the language year, or English-taught programs at UIC.
Korea University
Top-3, strong in business and engineering. High TOPIK or English scores needed.
Sungkyunkwan (SKKU)
Samsung-backed, strong in engineering and business, with tuition awards for strong scores.
Hanyang University
Known for engineering, in central Seoul.
Kookmin University
Seoul university known for automotive engineering, design and software, a realistic target after a year of Korean.
SeoulTech
Seoul's national university of science and technology, with lower tuition and an engineering focus.
